I’m re-blogging this because I decided I want to share the story behind this piece.
I bought this old AE-1 program 35mm camera at a garage sale for 3 bucks on whim in the summer of 2010. It didn’t come with a lens but I bought one right before xmas because I had signed up for a black and white film class next quarter.
During xmas we happened to have all of my father’s family staying over at our house (first time ever, i believe). I’m an only child and thought it was great having the house full of people. Part of the reason everyone was over was because my grandfather (father’s side) was not long for the world and we all wanted one last xmas together with him.
My dad and his twin brother have always been artistic, my uncle especially, since he got a Bachelor of Fine Art from Pacific Northwest College of Art. I asked my uncle to take a few shots with the camera to test that everything was working okay. He took a photo of me not long after I had woken up (admittedly in the afternoon) and I based this drawing off of that photo. We didn’t know it at the time but he was to follow my grandfather about a year later. This may be the last picture he took of me, certainly the last photograph.
